Australian Financial Review reports on life extensions to coal power plants

In an Australian Financial Review article about reforms proposed by the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) to extend the life of coal plants in order to ensure the security of energy supply, Foresight’s Head of Australia, Kim Nguyen was quoted on her views.

Nguyen said that the existing energy-only market was no longer appropriate as the system moves away from coal, stating that: “it’s clear that it probably doesn’t work that well because it’s more than just generation capacity, it’s also about ensuring that it’s dispatchable, it’s reliable, that there is system security”.

Nguyen is quoted alongside a diverse set of industry thought leaders including AEMO head Audrey Zibelman; Coal power entrepreneur Trevor St Baker; Grattan Institute energy program director Tony Wood; EnergyAustralia's head of markets, Ross Edwards; Victorian Energy Minister Lily D'Ambrosio; federal Energy Minister Angus Taylor; Queensland Energy Minister Anthony Lynham; Greens deputy leader Adam Bandt; and Clean Energy Finance Corporation head Ian Learmonth.
